Since the start of lockdown in March, our goal at Inclusive Gathering Birmingham has been to build connection, friendship and support for one another in a way that is personal, real and interactive, despite being largely online. With the Advent and Christmas season set to be rather odd (to say the least) this is even MORE important. So we’ve stepped up our efforts.
This blog post summarises all that is happening over December – we invite you to be part of as much or as little as you would like to be, whether you are new to IGB or have been with us from the start. You are exceedingly, warmly welcome. (Read more about what makes us tick here.)
Sundays in Advent …
We’ll be lighting the Advent Candles together each week, and if you would like to, you can download, print and colour your own Advent Wreath to be used with tea lights here. We’re having a colouring and coffee session at 2:30pm on the 29th to make our simple wreaths together, if you’d like some company.
We’ve also launched our IGB Kids club each week (in time for Advent!) at 2pm on Facebook Live and YouTube (aimed at primary aged kids). You can find out more about it here – the kids will also be following our Advent themes.
Inclusive Community Carols with Eeek
Every year, it’s our tradition to host a special Inclusive Community Carols event with local band Eeek. This year, we plan to do the same … even though we need to approach it a bit differently!
On Sunday, 13th December at 4pm we will LIVE STREAM this afternoon of contemporary Christmas songs, carols, candles and stories on Facebook Live. We always like to integrate art and creativity in our celebrations, so there are some plans in the works for some interactive activities! We will also continue our tradition of featuring a Christmas charity. This year, our event will be in aid of Red Letter Christians UK’s NRPF Debt Jubilee.
So don your sparkliest Christmas jumper, make a flask of hot cocoa, grab a mince pie and get ready to sing along from home!
Advent Creativity Sessions on Zoom
In addition to our zoom colouring and coffee session on Sunday, the 29th to make our Simple Celtic Advent wreaths together, we’ll also be hosting Christmas Craft sessions each Friday evening in December (before Christmas) on Zoom from 7-9pm.
Nettes will be helping us make some simple Christmas crafts using items from our recycling (and materials you are likely to find lying around). If you are missing anything, we can post it to you. Read more about these sessions here.
Nona will also be leading an Advent Creative Writing session on Zoom on Wednesday, 9th December 7-9pm. It’s a great way to try your hand at writing for the first time, or to polish your skills.
On Wednesday, the 16th Danielle will be hosting a Christmas Baking Session on Zoom where you can make a simple Vegan Spice Cake, Gingerbread People, Christmas Sugar Cookies (or all 3 if you are so inclined!). Novice bakers and those who just want to hang out (not bake) are welcome.
On Saturday, 19th December at 2pm, some of us will be meeting at Moseley Park to join in with the Moseley Christmas Tree Trail walk (in a socially distanced way). If you’d like to join in, there is more info in our Connect & Community FB group.
Christmas Eve & Christmas Day
On Christmas Eve, we are hosting a special Unorthodox Walk (a geographically dispersed community walk) based on the ancient spiritual practice of walking a labyrinth. You can join in from wherever you are 2pm – find out more here.
We are also directing folks to two of our partner churches. Jazz Community Church will be holding an afternoon online Christingle service (great for families) and The Church at Carrs Lane will hold a midnight service on Zoom. Follow them for details.
On Christmas MORNING, IGB are hosting a short All-Ages Worship Gathering on Facebook Live & YouTube. It will have something for everyone in it. 🙂
On Sunday the 27th December at 4pm on Facebook Live & YouTube (followed by a Zoom Discussion, we’ll be thinking about the ideas of incarnation and inclusion with Brad Jersak and David Derbyshire. The pre-recorded element will be fairly short, followed by most of the gathering happening on Zoom. A time to connect with one another in that strange liminal period between Christmas and New Year.
Our Community Groups will continue through Advent – if you are looking for deeper connections with folks, this is a great place to go (via Zoom). You can read about our groups here – most of them still have room for you. And they are friendly! 🙂
You can also join our Connect & Community Facebook group for chats, funny memes and last minute group Zooms. You are welcome.
